WEEK 3, Thing #6

Flickr toys are fun! I can definitely see the possible classroom applications. I made a trading card of the 8th graders with a picture from our Ketep Pass field trip. It was pretty easy and could be used to make all kinds of cards with vocab words, and other info. I make flash cards all the time with paper and marker - I don't think using this application would take longer and it would come out neater.

I also like the magazine cover idea for reports or projects. I could make them to introduce units or could have the students make them to summarize what they have learned. The trick is finding computer lab time.

Mappr would be cool for a social studies project and Montagr could be a neat way for picture smart students to show what they have learned in a unit. The poster maker application would be a neat way to display class photos with a class verses - maybe every class could have their own verse each year instead of just the senior class.

I bookmarked bighugelabs.com on my homepage so I could easily get to the flicker toys. I will definitely use them in my classroom.

WEEK 3, Thing #5

Flickr. Interesting. The groups were the part I found most helpful. I looked at pictures of classroom design and got some good ideas for my classroom. I really liked the shelf/Project Hall of Fame idea http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrkimmi/2942562760/in/pool-975324@N25 and the pockets for the backs of the chairs http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrkimmi/3290492223/in/pool-975324@N25. I would love to be able to have a more relaxed space with cushions or a couch http://www.flickr.com/photos/26880148@N03/2782525792/in/pool-975324@N25, http://www.flickr.com/photos/glassbeednorth/2786313905/in/pool-975324@N25but my classroom isn't big enough. I would like to do a better job of differentiating learning for my students and I think a classroom divided into sections would help. This picture is just pretty http://www.flickr.com/photos/ladys80/3351113028/in/pool-975324@N25. I would love to have a corner like this in my classroom.

I don't play a lot so I don't really see the point of looking at other peoples pictures and my kids do all the sharing of photos on Facebook. I do take pictures of my classroom/students and I never really know what to do with them but I also don't necessarily want to share them with a lot of people. Maybe my students would like to see them and it might be easier to put them on my Wikispace if I had an organizer like the one on Flickr. Internet speed would be an issue though. I hate waiting for photos to upload and download.

WEEK 1, Thing #1

I am really excited about taking this course. Over the next few weeks, I am going to do 23 "Things" to help me learn more about emerging technology and how to use it in my classroom. I have read about many of these tools and have wanted to learn more about them so I could use them to make my classroom more interactive. So, this blog will be a record of what I do and learn as I work through these 23 "Things."

A big thanks to our school librarian for finding this program and to our administration for helping us to be able to use it for CEU credits with ACSI. I want to be a Life Long Learner and I want to teach my students to love learning and to recognize that it doesn't just happen in the classroom.

WEEK 1, Thing #2

"7 1/2 Life Long Learning Habits "

I like that Life Long Learning puts the learner first and allows the learner to be in control of their own outcomes. I would like to be able to apply this to my Spec Science Classroom! Of course, Middle School students might need to learn how to be responsible for their own learning before they can be given too much control. If attitude is everything then I need to find ways to help them have the right attitude so they can become Life Long Learners.

The Learning habits that are easiest for me are beginning with a goal and taking responsibility for my own learning. I love to learn and I constantly look for opportunities to discover something new. I don't always have a goal in mind but I am a very goal oriented person so I am often looking for something specific to learn that will allow me to do something better - often that something has to do with my classroom or my middle school students. I like have an end point in mind when I begin.

The Learning habit that is the hardest for me is play. I am not good at setting work aside to do other things that I enjoy. I love teaching and I am always striving to do it better, so, I spend a lot of time on it. Sometimes it's too much time - you know the saying - All work and no play makes Spec Science Teacher a dull gal.

WEEK 2, Thing #3 and #4

Fun. I enjoyed setting up this blog and making an Avatar. It may not be terribly realistic but I love the lab coat and hair. My hair would look like that if I could speak English to the person at the Salon :) The instructions for making an Avatar said I could make a younger version of myself. I really was that thin once upon a time.

Setting everything up was pretty simple. I just followed the directions. I like that you can back up and change things you don't like. Registering the blog was just a matter of filling out the form and clicking submit.

I used to think this blog stuff was beyond my reach. It is really a piece of cake.
